School Bus Rock – New Wave

New Wave started in the late 70s and this is just a small selection of what we were listening to in the early 80s.

NOTABLE ARTISTS

Talk Talk

For me, the number one band from the New Wave era was definitely Talk Talk. They had a number of hits, but their Spirit of Eden album was a masterpiece.

This interview with Mark Hollis, the genius behind Talk Talk, speaks volumes as to why this band is so different than the rest.

The Romantics

The Romantics got a fair bit of radio play in the 80s and they still do on classic rock stations.

NOTABLE TRACKS

Ultravox – Dancing with Tears in My Eyes

In the early 80s there was a lot of talk about nuclear war and several movies were made about it. Two of the biggest were The Day After and Threads. It was during that time that Ultravox came out with Dancing with Tears in My Eyes along with a very moving video. Essentially the song is about what what one couple is experiencing after learning of an incoming nuclear attack.

CANADIAN ARTISTS

This playlist does feature several Canadian Acts. They are The Spoons, Chalk Circle and Blue Peter. The Spoons did have a bunch of hits and Chalk Circle’s April Fool got a lot of airplay, but Blue Peter’s Don’t Walk Past was something you would only hear on Alternative Radio and in limited dance clubs. I got to see Blue Peter when they played a Term End bash at Niagara College in Welland.
